Ural: Where is Chelyabinsk?

In the fervour of preparations for the trip, various thoughts come to mind. For example, what are we to expect? What’s to be packed and what’s to be bought at the place? Eventually, our thoughts have gone to the area of travel insurance.

Finally, we found two options:
– Europe
– Europe and Asia

We planned to cross the Ural Mountains, which are the contractual border between Europe and Asia – in the city of Chelyabinsk.
But is there really a border between the continents in Chelyabinsk?

The Question

We decided to make sure at the source. So, through the form on the website of the Chelyabinsk city hall, we asked:

Where is Chelyabinsk? Therefore, in Asia, in Europe, or maybe on both continents?

The Answer

After 30 days of official processing, a response was received.

Committee of Urban Construction and Architecture
Chelyabinsk City

Dear Agnieszka!

In response to a request for information about the location of the city of Chelyabinsk, the Committee of Urban Construction and Architecture of the city of Chelyabinsk informs that Chelyabinsk province is located on the border of Europe and Asia, and the city of Chelyabinsk is located in Asia. Additionally, we inform that in accordance with the engineering and geological characteristics of the territory of the city of Chelyabinsk, indicated in the elaboration of the general plan of the city, approved by the decision of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR of 30.12.1967 No. 957, the territory of the city lies on the border of two geomorphologic areas – the western one or the so-called “granite” one with granite rocks overlapping the surface, and the eastern one with lake and sea plains of the western-Siberian extreme. This fact of geological exploration allows us to claim that the city is divided by the border between the Urals and Siberia, passing indicatively along the “Meridian” road, i.e. the districts of Traktorozavodskaya (a tractor manufacturing plant) and Leninowski are in the Siberian part, and the western part of the city is in the Urals.

We are still impressed by the accuracy and quality of the response given by an official from the Committee of Urban Construction and Architecture.

Also, I guess we were also the exotic attraction in boring bureaucratic life with our question. 🙂

PS. We bought the insurance in an extended version.
